We have had a very busy week learning about what animals do in the fall to get ready for the winter! We talked about big concepts like hibernation and migration. We learned that some birds and butterflies fly somewhere warm (south) for the winter. We also learned that not only bears, but also animals like groundhogs, bats and beavers hibernate (or go into a deep sleep) in the winter, so in the fall they have to eat A LOT! We loved learning about squirrels, and how they spend the fall gathering up acorns and other nuts for food in the winter. Our art table was a busy place as usual: we marble painted squirrels, assembled an acorn and we painted bird puppets. We worked on patterning and color matching with owls, bats and squirrels. We also worked on number recognition and one-to-one correspondence with our squirrel and acorn game. The children had to identify the number of squirrels (or count them if they weren't sure what number it was) and then "feed" an acorn to each squirrel! We had such great helpers making our yummy applesauce! Cooking with children is a great way to work on lots of important skills! Math skills when counting and measuring, fine motor skills and visual perception when scooping, cutting and pouring, and motor planning when mixing, stirring and pouring. Possibly the greatest benefit is that it will help expand your child's palate. It has been proven that children are more inclined to taste new foods if they help to prepare it! Next week we will continue to talk about fall, concentrating on the changing leaves and learning about why they change colors!
We have a new Little Scout who joined our class this week! Please help us in welcoming Charlotte to our 3's circus!! Don't forget: Little Scouts will be closed on Monday, October 8th in observance of Columbus Day.
