We started talking about the cutest of all "winter" animals this week, the penguin! We learned that penguins live "at the bottom" of the globe, in Antarctica and areas of Argentina, Peru and Australia. We learned that there are many different types of penguins...and some of them have silly names like the Macaroni Penguin, and The Fairy Penguin. We talked about how most penguins build a nest and sit on their eggs, but the two largest species of Penguins, the Emperor and the King keep their eggs warm in a completely different way! We wore our penguin headbands while pretending to be Emperor penguins huddled together to keep themselves and their eggs...which they hold on their feet warm! It is very hard as a human to hold an "egg" on your feet without it rolling away! We also measured ourselves against a penguin cut out....the Emperor penguin is the largest of all the Penguins and taller than all our "sweet threes"! We assembled a penguin, watercolored a beautiful background for our penguins and made adorable penguin headbands. The children really enjoyed playing with our penguins in the insta snow during center time this week. We also had our penguin tracing pages which we use with dry erase markers. We had to trace the line from the penguin to the fish...it can be tricky to control our marker at first, but the more we tried the better we got! We also had our penguin number recognition game out this week. We needed to identify the number, and "feed" the penguin the appropriate number of fish erasers. Next week we will move to the arctic to learn about what types of animals live there!
