It was a busy, messy, science-y week here in our classroom this week! Our circle times were filled with science concepts like predictions/conclusions, density, sink or float, non-newtonian liquids and magnets! The children were offered some low-key process art experiences this week, and we thought that we would share with you a little blurb about the benefits of art for preschoolers, even things as simple as coloring at the table or easel. Art doesn't need to be complicated to offer valuable skill building opportunities. Here are some of the numerous benefits that art lends to the growth and development of preschoolers: Acts as an outlet for creative expression Art gives children the opportunity to express their feelings and imagination through forms, shapes and colors. It offers children the chance to be creative and innovative. Improves mood Art has been scientifically proven to improve a child's emotions. It offers an escape from disappointing situations or a bad mood. Children learn to modulate their emotions through drawing or painting. Helps in the development of motor skills Art helps in the development of children's small and large muscle groups. Painting on a large canvas or drawing at an easel helps in the development of coordination and strength in the child's arms and hands We explored the different textures of shaving cream, sticky foam and slime, such ooey-gooey fun! One of our process art experiences was using liquid watercolors and droppers to watch what happens when we dropped a tiny bit of color onto to salt paintings.... We made oil and water bottles to see what happens when two liquids that won't mix are put together. We used different materials to make "creatures" and then tested them in a water bucket to see which floated and which didn't. We also played with magnet wands and all sorts of magnetic and non-magnetic materials. And of course there was the slime...is it a solid or a liquid? One of the experiments that we did at circle time was called the Milk Experiment. It uses easy household items to create something mesmerizing!(This is a really cool one...check out this link to do this at home!) Thank you all for taking the time to conference with us!
Don't forget the Little Scouts will BE OPEN on Monday, March 5th. Originally this was supposed to be a teacher work-day, but we will now be open for students! Next week we will be talking about authors...with one that we all love..Dr. Seuss! It is bound to be a wacky week!
