We have had a very busy week learning about what animals do in the fall to get ready for the winter! We talked about big concepts like hibernation and migration. We learned that some birds and butterflies fly somewhere warm (south) for the winter. We also learned that not only bears, but also animals like groundhogs, bats and beavers hibernate (or go into a deep sleep) in the winter, so in the fall they have to eat A LOT! We loved learning about squirrels, and how they spend the fall gathering up acorns and other nuts for food in the winter. We had a special treat on Tuesday, we had the opportunity to watch the marching band practice for the high school football game! It was great fun! Our art table was a busy place as usual: we assembled an acorn, marble painted squirrels, and completed the first page for our portfolios. We will add to these portfolios with different seasonal/theme projects each month, and at the end of the year when they go home you will have a wonderful collection of art showcasing many different mediums. It is also a really fun way to see how your child's fine motor skills progress throughout the year! We worked on number recognition and one-to-one correspondence with our squirrel and acorn game. The children had to identify the number of squirrels (or count them if they weren't sure what number it was) and then "feed" an acorn to each squirrel! Our fine motor focus this week came in the form of tweezers. We had a "small world" sensory bin set up with an apple tree, pom pom "apples" and a bucket. The children had to use tweezers to transfer the apples into the bucket...it was great fun! We also worked on our visual spatial skills by playing a game that involved placing different toys on the correct outline...some of them were a little tricky at first! It wasn't just as easy as placing a square peg into a square, we had to figure out which squares were the right size, turned the right way, etc. The kids did great! Next week we will continue to talk about fall, concentrating on the changing leaves and learning about why they change colors!
Gentle Reminders: Please help us out by asking/taking your child to the bathroom in the morning before you drop off. As you know, the mornings can be a little crazy with only one teacher until 8:15 and it would be a huge help to us! Little Scouts will be closed on Monday, October 9th in observance of Columbus Day.
