We have spent the week talking about bugs and insects. We discussed what makes a bug an insect, and which bugs are insects and which ones are just "bugs"! (Confused yet? We are!) So, this is what we learned: insects have 3 body parts, 6 legs and 2 antennae. Some insects have wings, some don't. Some insects can swim, some can't. But all of them are pretty cool looking! We loved examining the bugs and insects under a magnifying glass, plastic of course :) The children got really good at identifying the 3 body parts and counting legs to see if they were insects or "just bugs". We also slipped in some number recognition by playing with playdough to make spots on our ladybug play mats as well as a fun dice games where they had to roll the die and put that many "bugs" into their bug jar. We also worked on our fine motor strength using tweezers to pick up "worms" and small bug scissors to capture a whole variety of bugs and insects. Our art table was a busy place!! We used all sorts of important preschool skills while creating our masterpieces this week! While we painted our beautiful bugs we strengthened our fine motor skills by holding and controlling our paintbrush, and used our eye-hand coordination to make sure that the paint went where we wanted it too. We continued these skills by painting paper plates which transformed into lovely ladybugs. Our ants on a leaf project required the use of our scissor skills to cut out a leaf and our spatial perception skills to make sure that we spaced out our ants appropriately! Grandma Mack had some fun songs about insects this week, one of which had us acting out the life cycle of a butterfly! Next week we will be talking about plants and flowers and things that grow in the spring!
