It has been a shape-tastic week! The children are really getting to know their shapes! We are working hard on remembering the attributes of each shape. For instance, a square has four sides that are the same size, whereas a rectangle has four sides, two short and two long. We were very busy at our art table this week...it was a combination of process art such as our shape printing and easel painting shapes and more product based art where we have a specific goal. We made a shape snake and worked on how to put shapes together to make a mouse from the book Mouse Shapes. The spatial reasoning that accompanies art projects such as this is still developing...keep an eye on how it will change throughout the year! We sang lots of fun songs at circle time about shapes. One of our favorites was called Holding Shapes. The children were all given a shape and had to stand when their shape was called...what a fun, interactive way to work on listening skills! Our pattern blocks and puzzle cards are a great way for us to explore some early geometry concepts and how the shapes fit together to make a picture. We continued to work on our sorting skills by sorting different shape manipulatives by shape or color. Next week we will be starting our fall unit. We will talk about different aspects of the fall season over the next month or so. We will be starting with the quintessential fall fruit...apples!
Please send each child to school with their favorite apple on their first day they come to school next week. We will be exploring apples in all sorts of different ways! Gentle Reminders:
