Happy Earth day! We have had a crazy busy week! We talked about how to keep the Earth healthy so that it is around for a long, long time. Recycle. Use less. Reuse things when you can. Turn off the lights. Turn off the water. We read books, sang songs and had a grand old time. We also talked a lot about different emotions and tools we can use when we feel big emotions like anger or sadness. We had lots of special visitors this week: students from LFHS came to read us books they had written for us as part of their English class, and Mrs. Webber, our library lady came to read to us!! For art this week we made a fingerpaint earth and a recycled paper flower. Zones of Regulation Our first full week using our new system went well. We are still learning how to identify what color our "chameleon" is feeling...which is why we focused on feelings and emotions by reading books. Just to clarify: the color that your child's chameleon is on at the end of the day is not an indicator of how their day was, simply an indication of how they were "feeling" the last time we had done a check-in with them. We are trying to help the children label and identify how they are feeling (especially in highly charged moments) and what tools we can use to settle down or calm down if they are feeling "red" (angry) or "blue" (upset, sad) or yellow (silly, excited). We learned 2 tools this week. Take 5 Breathing
Talking with Preschoolers about emotions As part of a special collaboration we do with Mrs. Dreiling's English 3 class at LFHS, each of the children has a book written especially for them! About a month ago we filled out forms including questions like favorite color, favorite food, favorite places. The High School kids then were assigned a Little Scout to write a storybook for. We had our "Big Scout" friends come and read the books to us, and then we played a little bit. We aren't sure who enjoyed it more...our Little Scouts or the Big Scouts! Gentle Reminders:
-Please remember to send in a picture of your Little Scout and their mom for our special mother's day bulletin board!! -We are running low on wipes! If anyone wanted to donate a package of wipes to the cause, we would greatly appreciate it! (We use them frequently to wipe the kids faces after lunch, hands after painting projects, gluing projects, etc) -Summer forms are due today!
