We wanted to update you on what was talked about in today's presentation so that you might be able to help your child process anything that they heard about today if necessary.
Meghan Brady, the hospital program coordinator at Lurie's for Gilda's Club, came to speak to us about Leukemia and ways that we can help support Ruby when she comes back to school. The first order of business was talking about Leukemia. Meghan brought stuffed cell examples-specifically a red blood cell, a white blood cell and a platelet. She explained that everything in our body is made up of cells, our skin, our bones, our blood, everything. She then explained that when cells in our blood aren't doing the job they are supposed to do, we can get very sick and that sickness is called Leukemia. It is a type of cancer. We then talked about how the medicine that will help the Leukemia go away and the person get better, also can make the person taking it feel very yucky. How it is a little different than when we take medicine to make an ear infection go away, and that is because this medicine, called Chemotherapy, is very very strong. We talked about how the chemotherapy might not only make a person feel poorly, but it might also make their hair fall out so they might choose to wear a hat or a bandana to keep their head warm. Or they might not. And either way is ok! That when Ruby comes back to class, she is still the same Ruby, hat or no hat! We decorated hats so that when she comes back, if she chooses to wear a hat, we can all wear one. We talked about kindness and how important it is. How we can tell her how much we missed her when she returns to Little Scouts! We talked about how Ruby might not want to talk about the hospital, the medicine or anything that she's been through and that's ok. She also might want to talk about it, and that is ok too! We revisited when we need to wash our hands and more importantly, WHY we need to wash our hands! Meghan also read us a book about a little girl with Leukemia and her many hats. We were given a lot of information in a very short amount of time, your child may have questions or may have confused some of the information. If YOU have any questions, or need help answering any questions, just let us know! We will do our best to help you out!
