We began our week up at the top of the world in the Arctic Circle talking about polar bears and seals and then to continue our study of Polar Regions we traveled south and started talking about the cutest of all "winter" animals, the penguin! We learned that penguins live in Antarctica, and also areas of Argentina, Peru and Australia. We will continue our penguin study next week! Our art table was a busy place as we created seals out of pre-cut paper pieces that we had to arrange together to look like a seal, used dot markers to "paint" a polar bear and made a paper penguin for the board in the hall. We finished up our Arctic animal circle times with one of our favorite stories, that also happens to be a little science experiment! It is the story of a polar bear who is always wishing that his fur was a different color...at the end...it's a cup of magic bleach that helps return to his proper color! The kids have a great time chanting along with the "kids" in the story! We dabbled a bit more in the science realm, learning how blubber keeps animals that swim in the icy cold arctic ocean warm. We filled a double layer plastic bag with crisco, and had the children experiment to see which kept their hand warmer...the blubber bag or just a plain plastic bag...be sure to ask them!! We had a new number recognition game out this week...an arctic animal one to one correspondence activity. We also had a few sensory experiences....snow dough made from baking soda and conditioner filled our table and we put "icebergs" and "water" on our light table as setting for our penguin figures. We will be closed next Friday, January 27th for a teacher in-service day.
